SVALI workshop in cryospheric processes in climate models

We would like to announce a short workshop to be held in Reykjavik, Iceland the 2nd – 4th September 2014. The workshop aims to bring together climate modelling specialists with specialists in field glaciology to discuss the problems of parameterising cryospheric processes within earth system models, we will have a particular focus on surface mass balance as the interface between climate and glacier models. There will be a 3 day field course at the end of the workshop to study cryospheric processes on the ground.
The format of the workshop aims to encourage collaborative working on specific live problems between specialists with a small number of long-form presentations and time for active discussion. The SVALI project is sponsoring the workshop and we expect to be able to support travel and accommodation costs for some participants. The number of participants will be limited  by the format and availability of facilities.
If you are interested in participating please contact Ruth Mottram ([email protected]) and Synne Høyer Svendsen ([email protected]) for further details and indicate which problems you would be interested in working on.
Some suggestions could be (but are not limited to):
  • Albedo parameterisations for snow and glacier ice
  • Retention of meltwater in snow packs
  • Snow processes such as densification, redistribution, crystal morphology etc
  • Scaling parameterization schemes
  • Problems in model coupling
Deadline for applications is 8th August. We look forward to hearing from you.Best wishes

Ruth Mottram and Synne Høyer Svendsen
