SVALI annual and Nordic Branch 2013

Helsinki and Lammi, Finland, 30 October - 2 November 2013

The third SVALI annual meeting was held on 30 October 2013 at the premises of the Finish Meteorological Office at the Kumpula Campus in Helsinki, Finland, on 30 October 2013.
The meeting was hosted by Timo Vihma and his colleagues at FMI and attended by 36 participants. Research results from the third project year and updated plans were for the next year were presented at the meeting and SVALI PhDs and PostDocs gave short status reports about their projects. Formal meetings of the SVALI Steering Group and the Graduate School Boards were held and adopted the project plan and the budget for the next year. A draft of a Memorandum of Understanding for continued collaboration of the SVALI partners beyond the 5-year NCoE project period was also adopted and will be presented to the administrations of the partner institutes.
The following morning, the group boarded a bus to the three-day NIGS annual meeting at Lammi where Onni Järvinen and his colleagues in the local organising committee had arranged perfect facilities for a scientific meeting in the idyllic Finnish countryside at the Lammi Biological Research Station. SVALI members presented fifteen oral presentations and five posters about their research at the meeting and exchanged comments about the science in the sauna by the lakeside and during their swimming in Lake Pääjärvi in the evenings. The next NIGS meeting will take place in Iceland in 2014.
